Biography

Alton Glenn Miller
was born on March 1st, 1904 in Clarinda, Iowa. After finishing high school, he was a student at the University of Colorado.

In the years 1926 and 1927, he played trombone in various bands and in the Ben Pollack Band and found a very good friend - Benny Goodman. As well, at this time, Glenn Miller did numerous recordings and performances with the dance orchestras.

In the beginning of the 30's, Glenn Miller played with the "Dorsey Brothers" and Ray Noble, where he found this particular sound for his own orchestras.

In 1937, he founded the band "Glenn Miller" without much success in the beginning.

But in 1939, he did his first live performances on the radio at the Glen Island Casino and that started his international breakthrough.

His first hits from that time where titles like "Little Brown Jug", "Sunrise Serenade" and "Pennsylvania 6-5000".

Shortly afterwards, he celebrated his biggest success with "In the Mood".

Since he was drafted by the military in World War II, he dissolved the band in 1942. In the army he conducted the "Army Air Force Orchestra": On December 15th, 1944, Glenn Miller died in an airplane crash over the English Chanel.
